Day 22: Bit of a quiet one today

Not much to blog about today as Martina and Enid headed out to shop before Martina met her Aunt for lunch, while Liz and Chris went in search of some medical intervention for the lurgy that has been hanging around both of us! What we did do while waiting to see the doc was to watch on the BBC news in the waiting room that Hong Kong airport is closed! This could be a very significant development for as as we are flying to Hong Kong in just over a week. May have to do some homework. 

After the doctor visit, which left us considerably poorer than we would have liked at the princely sum of 100 pounds each, we went to the Tate Modern Gallery where we met Enid and had some lunch. We inspected some of the collection and it was great to see a Kandinsky and an Australian protest work by artist Gordon Bennett on the contentious issue of celebrating the bicentennial vs Invasion day. Turns out that the work of several Australian artists is on display, with 8 new Australian works acquired in the last 3 years or so. We had a lovely lunch in the Tate Modern where we were lovely and dry when the heavens opened up, but we couldn’t stay to look for long as Liz was on a mission to seek some lost property that her niece had lost in a London cab the day before. tube rides, phone calls and conversations ensued. No joy yet, but we are on the case. 


Back to the Basin for a rest and then a team decision that we should have dinner at our favourite Turkish restaurant up on the Main Street. Delicious and huge servings and finishing off with Apple or Mint Tea was such a Turkish experience. Sadly tonight it is time to pack because we leave our beautiful penthouse at Limehouse for less salubrious but better located accomodation at Paddington tomorrow.

And what do you do when you arrive into Hong Kong at 6 in the morning after a somewhat sleepless flight... you magically get early check in into your Novotel booking at Tung Chung near the airport, dust off the cobwebs and freshen up before trekking out to the MTR and a short train ride to Sunny Bay and then on to the Disney Resort, affectionately dubbed the Mini Mouse House on our last visit to Hong King in 2010. The site is very much smaller than any of the other Disney parks, but there has been a lot of work done there since Liz had last visited and so Chris was keen to take the lead and apply the strategy to maximise riding. The forecast was for showers and a possible thunderstorm, and while there was no storm, there were some showers on and off and it was so hot and soooooooo humid! We had a really good day, starting by riding the old fashioned Disney taxi up Main Street, something we have not done before. Then it was off riding the Grizzly Gultch Coaster twice ...

To all those who visit this happy place, welcome! Those immortal words, spoken by a man with a mouse 64 years ago set the scene for the happy place that this blog will be.  For those of you who have followed the 2 travel tragics as we have blogged our way through Europe, Japan and North America, you will notice that we have increased our number to four. Our friends Martina and Enid flew out to London last week and have been true Culture Vultures, indulging in fine dining with  the likes of Heston and Yotam, swanning it on the West End with the theatrical glitterati and generally taking in all the big ticket sites on offer. We will reconnect with them in Scotland soon.  On Friday we farewelled the Bride and Groom (aka #Frankerton) as they jetted off to Scotland on the first leg of the honeymoon and in preparation for the Scottish wedding. See you soon S & G. And tomorrow it will be our turn as Chris and I head off to start our great adventur...

Day 4: Touring Glasgow with the Locals

A great start to today as Alan and Linda came and picked us up to join us on the Glasgow Hop On Hop Off Bus tour. We parked the car at Hilltop Station and caught the local Scotsrail train into Queens St Glasgow which is just around the corner from George Square, the start of the bus run. Of course train tragic Chris had to get the obligatory snap in front of yet another train. As we were leaving Queen St station, the station announcer warned Glaswegians that it was going to be extreme temperatures today, into the high 20s! cannot tell you how amused that the Aussie pair, but we did obey instructions and stayed well hydrated. The round trip on the Hop On bus takes a little over an hour and a half, and so we stayed on in the sun and saw all the sights of Glasgow from upstairs.
